ABOUT YOUNG LION
Roots Rock Reggae formed in Negril Jamaica, Based in Stroudsburg PA. Spreads Peace Love and Unity through Music – Young Lion began playing together for Sarah Street Grill’s George Wesley Tribute Night in December 2016 in Stroudsburg, PA.  Chris Condel and Lion Sanford were George’s bandmates, and Jamie Zaleski (of the Southside Bandits) fronted the band for most of the tribute night. They decided to keep working together, and added Howard “Chinna” Chang on Percussion/Hand Drums to round out their sound.  Young Lion’s blend of roots, rock, and reggae is accomplished by the different playing styles and experience of its members. Young Lion live performances include improvisation on their songs to provide listeners with a fresh experience every time you hear them perform.

Lion Sandford
Jamaica native Lion Sandford has been playing the bass guitar since age nine.  His father played piano professionally and his uncle was a bass player. “I always love the days; I love the sound of the “deep” and the way it drove the music.”  After moving to New Jersey, Lion started playing with a band in high school, which later auditioned for Sylvia Robinson who had the hit record Pillow Talk.  She was quite impressed and they soon hit the club circuit throughout NY and NJ.  He later moved to Dallas, Texas where he formed a band as well as the first reggae band radio station.  Lion found himself playing bass for Jamaica recording artist, Sister Carol as well as others.  He went on tour with Ras and while in California, he met drummer, Andton Richardson and headed back to Jamaica where they backed a string of Island based reggae bands including Ego Mouse and Sugar Black. Lion later moved to Pennsylvania started playing with George Wesley and the rest was magic.  After George’s death, he wanted to keep George’s music alive and formed the band Young Lion.

Chris Condel
Chris Condel started playing drums at 10 years old. In high school, he played in all bands. Marching band, concert and jazz band. He holds a bachelor’s of Arts from Bloomsburg University in audio recording with a concentration in music. He has worked at SI Studios since 98. It was there he met George Wesley. He joined George’s band in 2004 where he played with him until his untimely passing in 2016. Since then Chris formed another Reggae group with his former band mate Lion Sandford and newcomer Jamie Zaleski. The band plays original and cover material along with George Wesley originals.

Howard “Chinna” Chang
Howard “Chinna” Chang was born in Kingston, Jamaica.  Growing up, he was surrounded by music. Music became a part of his life, and he was self-taught on percussion and vocals.  He came to the United States and resided in New Jersey with his family. His family all have musical backgrounds.

In the 1980’s, he played with a Reggae band out of North Carolina called Rolley Gray and the Sunfire.  Most of the performances were held in Charlottesville Virginia where he resided at the time. He became a guest performer for local reggae bands in the Charlottesville and the West Virginia area.

In the late 80’s and into the 90’s, he began to write his own music and made several recordings.  In the early 2000’s, he joined a Reggae band in West Virginia called Vibrations as the lead vocal percussionist.  The band did a number of fundraising performances for local charities and churches.

Howard returned to Pennsylvania in 2007 and performed with Reggae bands called No Discipline and Submatics and a mixed genre band called Gonzo and the Funky Family. Although not part of the George Wesley band, he was guest performer with George over a dozen times. When George passed away, Howard became a part of the band Young Lion. The band recorded an album in 2018, named Young Lion Pride, and opened for Matisyahu Band.  Howard continues to perform with Young Lion and does private bookings.
